About this site

Welcome to Behind the Viewfinder -- A Year in the Life of Photojournalism.

If you have visited this site as one of our regulars, or if this is your first visit, I want to say 'thank you' for taking part of your time online with this project. Behind the Viewfinder - A Year in the Life of Photojournalism set out to tell the real story about photojournalists. This site started as an idea in the fall of 1997, and went live as a work in progress in January of 1998.

It's concept began following the death of Princess Diana. The world's spotlight was focused on paparazzi, and to some extent, the globe trotting photojournalists who are often the subject of coffee-table books. As a producer, I recognized the opportunity to tell a more interesting story. . . to go beyond the obvious and seek out a different group of storytellers: community photojournalists.

As a producer, it was my hope to capture what it is like to do the job of telling the daily news, and I felt the best way to do that was to let the journalists tell it in their own words.

The beginning

The Web site that began as an idea shared via e-mail, has grown to the size and scope you see today. As participants in an on-line publication of community photojournalism, our group of photojournalists have agreed to share their thoughts, feelings, and reactions to their role as factual storytellers. Each of them has made a commitment to keeping a diary of their work and collectively contributing to a year's worth of journals. Sometimes, sharing the photos they make, but mostly, sharing the realities of the job and the demands it places on them.

I made my initial choices of subjects carefully. My initial offers to join the cast went out to 10 people. Of the initial 10, I chose one because he was a photojournalist torn in his career choices. His journey and decision making would make interesting reading, I thought. He accepted my offer to join the project, then within a week dropped out of the profession in pursuit of his alternate career.

It's a geographically diverse group. It's a group with a mixture of experience. It's a group of people who's work I admire and who's insights lead me to a better understanding of the profession. To learn more about them, read here.
