My old school, Jesuit High School played in the City championship against Elk Grove High School last week. I didn’t have any assignments, so I figured I would go out and see what I could see. I have a California Interscholastic Federation media pass so I can get on the field at any high school game in the state. Although I wasn’t shooting for anyone in particular, I figured I would try out something I had wanted to do for awhile: Shoot with just one body, a 35mm f/2 lens, and a roll of 800 film. Ok, so I had an extra roll in my pocket just in case. But that is all I brought for equipment. Since it didn’t really matter what I got, I just went out there and had fun.

I didn’t realize I was going to do so much chatting. High school buddies, other photographers, even people associated with the other team kept my vocal cords busy on this chilly December night. But I stayed close to the action, following up and down the field, and trying to blend in with the players on the side-lines. One thing I love about high school sports is the virtual unlimited access they give the media. I could be right in the thick of it on the sidelines and no one cares. At NFL games, photographers are not allowed to shoot in between the 35 yard lines, and can’t be where the players are but have to go around the benches.

Jesuit got trampled 41-7. The two best shots I got on the night came on their only touchdown in the third quarter. If I had a longer lens, I probably wouldn’t have grabbed my wide-angle fast enough to capture the action that happened right in front of me. I didn’t have the equipment that night to go to the action; therefore, I had to wait for it to come to me.

And I am happy to report that when it did come my way, I was ready for it.
