James ZENG-HUANG, is a photographer / picture editor of China Features. My job is to take pictures or edit photos to printing media outside of China.
I was born in Southeast China's Fujian Province in 1957. When I was 18 and just graduated from high school, I was sent to the countryside to be re-educated by farmers - working as a peasant.
In 1978 when Deng Xiaoping started to conduct the economic reform in China, I got a chance to enter Nankai University, Tianjin and got my B.S degree in 1982. I started to work as a picture researcher at the photo desk at OUTLOOK weekly, Beijing in 1985. I registered to the graduate school at S. I. Newhouse Public Communications School, Syracuse University, NY majoring in photojournalism in 1987 and received my M.A. degree in 1991.
During the years in the Unites States, I had been working as a technician at custom darkrooms in NYC, a manager at a NYC one-hour photo store, a photographer intern at NEWSDAY, a studio photographer in NYC, a designer at a NYC Chinatown advertizing agency, and a reporter at a NYC Chinatown community newspaper to finance my tuition and expenses in the school. I came back to China in 1992 to work as a photographer for Xinhua News Agency (New China News Agency), then switched to my current position at China Features in 1995.
In the past few years, my photos have been published in NEWSWEEK, ESQUIRE, SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST SUNDAY MAGAZINE, ASIAN WEEKLY and others. The most impressive events I covered in the past few years were 94' Bosnia Crisis (for Xinhua); Chinese Children in Remote Area (for UNICEF); Damming the Yangtze River (for Sygma). With the financial sponsored by Nikon Hong Kong Limited (via Flash Bright Development Ltd.), I published my first personal photo book LIFE & DEATH IN BOSNIA (100 pages with 61 photos) in 1995. I also write on communication photography for Chinese professional publications, such as CHINESE PHOTOGRAPHY, THE PEOPLE'S PHOTOGRAPHY, CHINA PHOTO PRESS, POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY, etc, and also work as a special invited columnist for CHINESE PHOTOGRAPHY magazine, one of the top professional photo publications in China.
