105 degrees. 5pm. American Legion baseball, Rio American High School.

My assignment was to shoot he Rio-Loma American Legion baseball team for a story Neighbors is doing on them, focusing on three players they want images of. When I arrive, I ask the coach for the numbers of the three players, only to find out that just one of them is present for the afternoon game.

Great. With no shade around, I am sweating buckets standing in the sun shooting when I  find out that Gabe Spooner, the lone member of the desired-trio, is the designated hitter for the day. Wonderful, I am going to have to go back to the office and show editors images of a designated hitter. I didnąt realize that the scourge of major league baseball had trickled down to the ranks of high school players.

It was just one of those afternoons. I ended up shooting some fielding action of other players, and tried to get the best image of Gabe I could when he came up to bat. Confession time: I packed up my things after 45 minutes, retreating to my swimming pool.

"Do you write the column too?" inquired one of the players.
"No, I just shoot the pictures," I replied.
"Wow, that's pretty easy."

Indeed.
