It’s a snap.
By all rights it should come easy to me, to any photographer.
But no, I have to work at it. In fact for the longest time I
didn’t bother, and it was my loss.
I’m talking about snap shots … happy snaps or whatever you will
call them. For the longest time I had to see where and why the
pix I took would be used, I never counted the bulletin board or
the fridge as viable ‘clients.’
A few years ago, I was harassed into taking snapshots. I immediately
noticed that the free style approach had slipped into the daily
work, which brought my pictures to a new level. It gave me a freedom
to explore the fringes, and often shoot images that were over
the top, but I was pushing myself again. I liked it. However,
to this day I still have problems. I am fighting my instinct to
pass on snaps. I’m really trying to shoot for myself.

I
lost count of the U-turns I did today.
Before, I’d be driving along, see a pic line up, or
get close, and keep on driving. That’d be a neet pic, I’d say, and
keep on driving. But not on this trip. I planned a couple of days
here, so that I know I can take the time and stop for the shots.

So when the ‘next five miles’ lay out in front of me, I turned
around and stopped. I also took pictures, lots of pictures at
the Grand Canyon. IN years past I may have thought that is clearly
wasn’t going anywhere, I’d get it some other time if I needed
to. Today, I shot colour, black and white and digital. And I
had fun doing it.
There is still one part of the snapshot I don’t get.

It doesn't come naturally to me to stop for these types of pix
... but I'm working at it.

Universally, people were standing there taking pictures of
each other standing with the Grand Canyon behind them. Perhaps
the ultimate person with thing picture. People with friends
… no problem. The friends … no problem. The Volvo in front of
the Grand Canyon I can see. But pix of Aunt Martha posing in
front of the world’s various tourist spots I haven’t worked
my way up to that yet.
I did get some practice at it though. People noticed my cameras
and would ask if I could take a picture of the whole group with
their camera.
‘Sure,’ I’d say,‘It’s a snap.’

I still have trouble of the snapshots of people
posing in front of famous places. But a pic of The Volvo at
the Grand Canyon just made perfect sense.

A dead tree is contrasted against the spectacular
Grand Canyon. Even in the 'off' season the park was bustling with
tourists.

Bonus Snap
Making my way to the Grand Canyon, I
came across the Arizona chapter of teh Planes of Fame museum.
A welcomed rest in the day and a chance to take a cue from this
T-33.
