Epilogue On January 4th, 1999 I wrote about choosing NOT to go to a University that offers at photojournalism degree. It was an very difficult decision for me to make, because it definitely involved some risks. Other students and some professionals encouraged me to go the tried-and-true route, a 4-year degree in photojournalism at a school like San Jose State University or California State University, San Francisco. I opted not to, going instead to the best school that accepted me. U.C. Davis is ranks 12th in the national among public Universities and so I was off to Davis. I wanted to get a broader education that offered me more options in the future than just being a newspaper photographer. I wanted the door to be open to other opportunities, but at the same time I still wanted to pursue photojournalism. Yes, I wanted to have my cake and eat it too. The last two months has solidified my faith in my choice. Damn that feels good. After Ohio University my faith in my own choices was a bit shaken. A series of events has restored some faith in myself that I had lost. First, I was awarded 3rd place in the San Francisco Bay Area Press Photographers Association's Greg Robinson Memorial student portfolio competition. Competing with San Jose State and CSU San Francisco photojournalism students, many who were older than myself, and coming away with 3rd place felt great. I am on the right track. Not too long after that I received word from the Idaho Statesman in Boise, ID that I had been selected for their summer internship. The Statesman was my first choice of the newspapers I applied to because it is a solid mid-sized daily, well-respected, and is in a beautiful area. I am excited about doing nothing but photojournalism for the summer. After hearing from the Statesman earlier in the day, I received an e-mail that evening from a friend I met at Ohio University. Tom Witte wanted to congratulate me on my Award of Excellence in the Sports Action category of the College Photographer of the Year Competition . CPOY is the largest and most prestigious photojournalism competition for college students in the United States. I was very excited after winning that award. Finally, last week I learned I was a recipient of The Sacramento Bee Journalism Scholarship for the 2000-2001 school year. The $2000 scholarship will come in very handy and make a nice addition to the resumé. Throughout all the earlier self-doubt, BTV was instrumental in keeping my head up. I wrote about my triumphs and struggles in photojournalism, and you, the readers of BTV, often made my week with your encouraging comments and kind letters. I can't imagine going through the past year and a half without BTV and it's readers. It's provided me both an outlet and a support system. Its kept me in the ball game. No doubt the next couple years will be one hec of a ride. Thank you, BTV, for playing such a key role in where I am today. Joeseph Jaszewski |
