| "Thank goodness for film" This past summer the U.S. Gymnastics Championships were held in Sacramento for several days. I was hired by the Sacramento Bee to help in coverage of this event. My primary responsibility: transport film from the Bee photographers on the floor of Arco Arena north of Sacrament to the Bee's office at 21st and Q St. in downtown. I made a few of these 20-minute trips each evening, allowing the editors to get a jump-start on laying out the pages. I had enough time in between runs and helping the photographers on the floor to shoot some competition myself. All three evenings I had my Canon EOS-1 and 70-200 on my shoulder loaded with some fresh Fujipress 800 ready to go. On the final evening, Vanessa Atler performed well enough on the balance-beam to win the national title in that event. I photographed Atler on the beam that night in between film runs. Last week I received an Award of Excellence in the Sports Action category of the National Press Photographer Association's College Photographer of the Year competition for that photograph of Atler. It was my first such award from CPOY(www.copy.org), the largest competition for college photojournalists in the country. The image also helped me to a thrid-place finish in the San Francisco Bay Area Press Photographer Association's 1999 student portfolio competition. Additionally, it was is part of my portfolio that landed me an internship at the Idaho Statesman this summer. The Sacramento Bee has since outfitted nearly every photographer with Nikon D1 digital cameras to replace their film counterparts. Had this been the case over the summer, my job of transporting film would have been replaced by a laptop, digital camera, and phone line in the Arco Arena pressroom. The image, along with what it has brought me, would never have existed.
